Have you ever found yourself grappling with doubts, questioning whether you’ll ever reach your aspirations or turn your passions into reality? It’s completely normal to have moments of doubt, uncertainty, and a lack of motivation on the journey toward your goals. Even the most optimistic among us face periods of self-doubt and imposter syndrome, where maintaining a positive outlook requires conscious effort.
In these moments, it’s essential to actively cultivate positivity to counteract the creeping negativity. You will need strategies for staying positive and motivated that can truly make a difference in maintaining a positive mindset. Here are 14 strategies I have consciously worked with to nurture a positive mindset and to build my emotional resilience.
1. Stay Grounded
For me, grounding involves connecting with nature daily. Whether it’s savouring the scent of roses, taking a sunset stroll along the beach, or simply feeling the sunshine on my skin during my morning coffee.
It’s in the simplest acts of grounding yourself that can truly make a difference. Before the rush of the day starts, before you look at your phone, computer and emails, sit with your feet on the bare ground and just feel the earth beneath your skin. Do this every day, and your body and rhythmic cycle will thank you for it. These grounding rituals anchor me and set a positive tone for the day.
2. Keep Positive Thoughts at the Forefront
Maintaining positivity requires making a deliberate effort to keep uplifting thoughts front and centre.
Utilize screen savers with positive affirmations – you can find heaps on Pinterest, Facebook or Instagram.
Set reminders on your phone/computer that contain positive affirmations throughout the day at different intervals and consciously choose gratitude over negativity.
3. Create a Vision Board
Visual representation is a powerful tool for manifesting aspirations. Whether digital – on your phone or computer as a screen saver – or analogue – pictures stuck to a frame or pinboard – assembling a vision board of your goals serves as a tangible reminder of what you’re striving towards be it fitness, wealth, career, or relationships.
4. Display Your Vision and Goals
Don’t tuck your dreams away in obscurity. Display your vision board prominently where you’ll encounter it frequently—whether it’s in the kitchen, bathroom, or by your bedside. I have mine in the middle of my staircase I walk up and down regularly each day.
Immersing yourself in your goals by regularly seeing them, reinforces your commitment to achieving them and helps your RAS – Reticular Activating System – find ways to achieve them.
5. Surround Yourself with Positive Influences
Choose your company wisely. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and motivate you, while also holding you accountable when needed. Quality over quantity is key when it comes to friendships that fuel growth and positivity.
6. Practice Meditation
Meditation, though daunting for some, comes in various forms. Start with short, manageable sessions and explore different techniques until you find what resonates with you.
Whether it’s guided meditations, breathwork, or mindful moments in nature, prioritize activities that calm your mind and nurture your spirit.
Simply start with 2 minutes of focused breathing and build from there. Breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth – slow, deep breaths, feeling the air through the nostrils, filling the lungs, releasing the air back through the mouth and with it, any bottled up negative energy.
7. Engage in Gratitude
Make a habit of acknowledging and appreciating the good things in your life, no matter how small they may seem.
A good practice is to keep a ‘Gratitude Diary” beside your bed to write reminders in it of those things you are grateful for.
Gratitude can shift your focus from what’s lacking to what you have, fostering a positive outlook.
8. Embrace Challenges
Instead of seeing obstacles as roadblocks, view them as opportunities for growth and learning.Every setback can teach valuable lessons that propel you forward.
Look for the Silver Lining”.
9. Break Goals into Smaller Steps
Sometimes, overwhelming goals can dampen motivation. Break them into smaller, more manageable tasks. Celebrate each small achievement to maintain momentum.
10. Initiate Self Compassion
Be kind to yourself when facing difficulties or setbacks. Avoid harsh self-criticism and negative self-talk, replacing it with self-encouragement, understanding and positive self-talk.
11. Seek Inspiration
Read books, listen to podcasts, or watch motivational videos to gain inspiration and new perspectives. Hearing others’ stories of resilience and success can reignite your own passion.
You-Tube is a great resource for uplifting short motivational videos that I often watch during lunch, or if I’m feeling a little down or de-motivated, when I have my coffee/breakfast in the mornings and need a “boost” of positivity.
12. Physical Activity
Exercise is a powerful mood booster. Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, which can improve your overall mood and reduce stress. It doesn’t need to be a full on cardio workout, any movement that gets the blood moving is a great start.
13. Mindfulness and Mindset
Cultivate mindfulness through activities like yoga, deep breathing, or simply focusing on the present moment. Additionally, adopting a growth mindset can help you see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.
14. Limit Negative Influences
Just like increasing your positive influences, be mindful limiting your negative ones. Be aware of the content you consume, the people you surround yourself with, and the environments you expose yourself to. Limiting negativity can greatly impact your mindset.
Remember, staying positive is a continuous journey and requires consistent effort, but the rewards are immeasurable. You don’t need to do all of these strategies all at once, but pick out a few at a time, see how they resonate with you and change it up if you find they become less influential over time.
It’s okay to have down days—sometimes, they serve as catalysts for growth. However, consistently applying these strategies and being patient with yourself will help you stay on track toward your goals.
If negativity becomes overwhelming, don’t hesitate to seek professional support.
Let’s navigate these moments of doubt together, because ultimately, the alternative to positivity is far less appealing
